History & character
From Animal Garden to Residential Area in Innsbruck
In the 16th century, Archduke Ferdinand II. established an animal garden with a pleasure house in the area of the Inn, serving as a hunting ground for the courtly society. The Tiergartenstraße recalls this era. Until the 19th century, Höttinger Au was predominantly agricultural. The construction of the university bridge in 1930/31 initiated a dense development that changed the character of the area. In 1938, Hötting was incorporated, making the Au part of Innsbruck. After World War II, there was a significant increase in housing construction, including the Gießensiedlung and Heilig-Jahr-Siedlung. Today, Höttinger Au is an urban residential area characterized by its proximity to the university and its natural setting by the Inn.
