History & character
From Anbruggen to Mariahilf-St. Nikolaus
Mariahilf-St. Nikolaus, formerly known as Anbruggen, is regarded as the oldest district of Innsbruck. Its foundation dates back to the construction of the first Inn bridge around 1165/1170 when Margrave Berchtold V. established a market settlement on the left bank of the Inn. This settlement initially thrived, while the one on the opposite bank lost significance. By the 15th century, the name Anbruggen became prevalent, before the area was named after the local churches Mariahilf and St. Nikolaus in the 18th century. The district was characterized by various trades and crafts, including foundries that produced significant artworks. St. Nikolaus Street served as the main thoroughfare for a long time until it was paved in 1829. The current St. Nikolaus Church, inaugurated in 1885, is an example of the neo-Gothic style. Today, Mariahilf-St. Nikolaus is a quiet district distinguished by its historical substance and proximity to the city center. Its location by the Inn and the numerous buildings from different eras contribute to the unique character of the area.
