History & character
From Early Settlement to Market Town
Rum, a market town since 1987, has a long history that dates back to ancient times. Early signs of settlement suggest terraced agricultural areas. The name Rum may be connected to the Mur river catchment area and possibly derives from the Indo-European word for rushing water. The village was first documented between 1152 and 1158. Over the centuries, Rum evolved from a small village with a Gothic church into an independent community that experienced significant settlement pressure due to its proximity to Innsbruck. From the 1970s, the district of Neu-Rum emerged with new residential areas and an industrial zone, while Hoch-Rum, located above the old town center, hosts a private clinic. Today, Rum is one of the wealthiest municipalities in Tyrol, characterized by a blend of traditional architecture and modern residential developments.
