History & character
From Uninhabited Floodplain to Olympic Village
The Olympic Village is a district of Innsbruck, the capital of Tyrol, which emerged from the former municipality of Arzl. Originally, the area was an uninhabited floodplain, the Haller Au. Starting in 1893, a settlement developed around the state shooting range, later known as Neu-Arzl. After merging with Innsbruck in 1940, the settlement, which then had about 740 residents, grew steadily. From 1961, the first Olympic Village was built for the 1964 Winter Olympics, followed by a second village for the 1976 Games. These large residential complexes continue to shape the district, characterized mainly by high-rise residential buildings. The district's coat of arms reflects its historical roots and Olympic past. Today, the Olympic Village is an urban district with a high population density and a distinctive mix of residential areas and local amenities.
