History & character
From Salt Mine to Trade Town Hall
Hall in Tirol was first mentioned in a document in 1232 and quickly developed into a center for salt production. The salt mine in the Hall Valley shaped the city and its surroundings for centuries. From 1303, Hall was granted city rights and became a central market and trade city in North Tyrol. The importance of the city is also visible in the city coat of arms, which features two lions holding a salt container. Over the centuries, Hall experienced numerous developments, including the relocation of the mint to Hall in 1477, which led to the innovative minting of silver coins.
Today, Hall is a charming city that combines historical elements with modern life. The old town, characterized by well-preserved buildings and narrow streets, reflects the rich history. The city offers a pleasant living environment close to the provincial capital Innsbruck and is known for its cultural events and picturesque location in the Inn Valley.

Real building heights (OpenStreetMap footprints with heights from the BEV laser scan), sun hours and shadows from sun position and geometry. How much of it reaches you also depends on orientation and windows. Terrain is included, from the official elevation model out to 12 km: a mountain to the south takes the winter sun just as the house opposite does. Where the sun only grazes a ridge, the figure remains an approximation. In the Inn valley the winter sun reaches only 19 degrees at midday, while the mountains and slopes to the south rise 10 to 23 degrees above the city. Measured for 21 December on a third floor, the terrain costs a good two hours in Hötting, almost three in the city centre, a little over three at Sieglanger and almost four in the middle of Amras. At the foot of the slope below Schloss Ambras it takes all of the direct sun: the slope stays above it all day, only just at midday.
