History & character
From Early Settlement to Today
Tulfes is a municipality in the Innsbruck-Land district of Tyrol, with a history dating back to pre-Christian times. Findings from the first millennium BC, including a pottery shard and an Illyrian axe, attest to early settlement. The name Tulfes comes from the Latin tellevo, meaning usable land. The first documentary mentions of the place date back to 1266. From 1312, Tulfes was recorded as a tax-paying municipality in the Inntaler tax book. The church of St. Thomas was first mentioned in 1332, and a separate parish was established in 1891. The Kolbenturm, built around 1200, is the oldest preserved building in the municipality. Today, Tulfes is situated on a mid-mountain terrace and has 1717 inhabitants. The community is characterized by its quiet location at the foot of the Glungezer and offers a blend of rural charm and proximity to the city of Innsbruck.
