History & character
From Clearing to the Municipality of Rinn
Rinn is a municipality with a long history that dates back to its first documented mention in 981. The name Rinn may refer to the Rhaeto-Romanic word for 'clearing' or derive from 'run' or 'water conduit.' Historically, the area was originally the valley floor of the Inn, shaped by glacial activity during the Ice Age. Over the centuries, Rinn evolved from an agriculturally oriented settlement to an independent tax municipality in 1312. The pilgrimage church of Anderl von Rinn, built around 1670, is a significant structure in the community and reflects the region's religious tradition. In 1776, the church was remodeled to its current form, retaining the Gothic tower of the original building. Today, Rinn is situated at 918 m above sea level in the southeastern foothills and is characterized by a picturesque landscape that is 62 percent forested. The municipality consists of the clustered villages of Rinn and Judenstein, along with several other hamlets. Its tranquil location and proximity to nature make Rinn an attractive place to live for those who appreciate the closeness to both nature and the city of Innsbruck.
