Aldrans

History & character

From the Salt Road to a Residential Community

Aldrans, a municipality in the Innsbruck-Land district, has a long history that dates back to the Late Bronze Age. The name Aldrans originates from the old field name Allrainer Veld, mentioned in 1312. In the Middle Ages, the place was an important hub on the Salt Road and was referred to as "locus Alarein" in documents. Over the centuries, most of the properties in Aldrans belonged to the Tyrolean sovereign or the Wilten Abbey. The local population was known for their enthusiasm for theater, as evidenced by the Martin plays and the unique "Amazon theater." A devastating village fire in 1893 destroyed many buildings, and the Aldrans transmitter was established in 1927. Today, Aldrans is a residential community that offers a quiet lifestyle with good access to the city due to its proximity to Innsbruck.

Climate & environment

On hot summer days, local cooling matters. Water close by cools the surroundings noticeably.

Real building heights (OpenStreetMap footprints with heights from the BEV laser scan), sun hours and shadows from sun position and geometry. How much of it reaches you also depends on orientation and windows. Terrain is included, from the official elevation model out to 12 km: a mountain to the south takes the winter sun just as the house opposite does. Where the sun only grazes a ridge, the figure remains an approximation. In the Inn valley the winter sun reaches only 19 degrees at midday, while the mountain ridges to the south rise 10 to 19 degrees above the city. Measured for 21 December, the terrain costs just under two hours in Hötting, a good two in the city centre, close to three at Sieglanger and six and a half in Amras below the Patscherkofel.
