History & character
From Early Settlement to Amras
Amras, first documented in the 10th century, is a cadastral community and a district in the southeast of Innsbruck. The settlement dates back to the Late Bronze Age, and a Roman settlement is also evidenced. The name might be derived from the Latin ad umbras, meaning 'situated in the shadows.' Over the centuries, Amras experienced various rule, including that of the Counts of Andechs, who acquired Amras Castle. The first church was consecrated in the 13th century, and the late Gothic church that still stands today was consecrated in 1489. In the 19th century, Amras developed into a spa town, particularly due to the discovery of a healing spring. In 1938, Amras was incorporated into the city of Innsbruck. Since then, the area has undergone significant changes, with substantial residential expansions and the creation of commercial areas. Today, Amras is a lively district that offers both residential and business opportunities.
