Reichenau

History & character

From the Meadow to a Modern Residential Area

Reichenau was originally a meadow area belonging to the municipality of Amras at the confluence of the Sill and Inn rivers, first mentioned in 1288. The name Reichenau indicates that the area was made cultivable through slash-and-burn cultivation. In the 15th century, the Reichenau estate became documented, serving the Innsbruck court's supply needs. In 1904, Reichenau was separated from the municipality of Amras and incorporated into Innsbruck. After World War II, a severe housing shortage in Innsbruck led to the establishment of a new residential area on the site of the former estate and airport, which quickly developed into a district with over 10,000 residents. In the following years, numerous schools and churches were built, shaping the district. Today, Reichenau is a vibrant district with a high population density and diverse housing options.

Real building heights (OpenStreetMap footprints with heights from the BEV laser scan), sun hours and shadows from sun position and geometry. How much of it reaches you also depends on orientation and windows. Terrain is included, from the official elevation model out to 12 km: a mountain to the south takes the winter sun just as the house opposite does. Where the sun only grazes a ridge, the figure remains an approximation. In the Inn valley the winter sun reaches only 19 degrees at midday, while the mountain ridges to the south rise 10 to 19 degrees above the city. Measured for 21 December, the terrain costs just under two hours in Hötting, a good two in the city centre, close to three at Sieglanger and six and a half in Amras below the Patscherkofel.
