Ampass

History & character

From the Salt Road to a Residential Community

Ampass, first mentioned in a document in 1145, is located on an ancient salt road that transported salt from Hall to Matrei. This route, which likely dates back to Roman times, was an important trade route. The name Ampass may have Celtic origins, meaning 'between two streams.' Over the centuries, the area has been the site of historical events, such as the Tyrolean freedom struggle in 1809. From the mid-19th century, Ampass experienced a decline in population but has since transformed from an agricultural village to a residential area in recent decades. The population has grown, and the community has become an attractive place to live in the Innsbruck surroundings. Today, Ampass lies in a basin surrounded by the picturesque landscape of the southeastern mid-mountains.

Real building heights (OpenStreetMap footprints with heights from the BEV laser scan), sun hours and shadows from sun position and geometry. How much of it reaches you also depends on orientation and windows. Terrain is included, from the official elevation model out to 12 km: a mountain to the south takes the winter sun just as the house opposite does. Where the sun only grazes a ridge, the figure remains an approximation. In the Inn valley the winter sun reaches only 19 degrees at midday, while the mountain ridges to the south rise 10 to 19 degrees above the city. Measured for 21 December, the terrain costs just under two hours in Hötting, a good two in the city centre, close to three at Sieglanger and six and a half in Amras below the Patscherkofel.
