Mils

History & character

From Roman Times to a Modern Community

Mils is a community with a long history that dates back to Roman times. Early finds, including skeletons and coins, attest to settlement during this period. The place is first mentioned in a document from 930/31. The name Mils derives from the ancient word *mulias, meaning 'debris/alluvial cone.' Over the centuries, Mils has evolved, including the construction of the hunting lodge 'Hirschenlust Grienegg' in 1585, which was soon destroyed by fire. The parish church also has a long tradition, with roots tracing back to the 15th century. In the last 40 years, Mils has significantly developed as a residential area due to its sunny location. The northern district is now closely connected to the town center, while a business park has emerged in the south.

Real building heights (OpenStreetMap footprints with heights from the BEV laser scan), sun hours and shadows from sun position and geometry. How much of it reaches you also depends on orientation and windows. Terrain is included, from the official elevation model out to 12 km: a mountain to the south takes the winter sun just as the house opposite does. Where the sun only grazes a ridge, the figure remains an approximation. In the Inn valley the winter sun reaches only 19 degrees at midday, while the mountain ridges to the south rise 10 to 19 degrees above the city. Measured for 21 December, the terrain costs just under two hours in Hötting, a good two in the city centre, close to three at Sieglanger and six and a half in Amras below the Patscherkofel.
