History & character
From the Bronze Age to Today in Thaur
Thaur is a municipality with a long history, dating back to the Bronze Age. A burial field indicates that the area was already settled around 1000 BC. The name Thaur may originate from the Celtic language, meaning 'rock, mountain pass'. Thaur was first mentioned in a document in 827. In the Middle Ages, salt extraction played an important role, and the Thaur Castle served as a court seat in the 13th century. Today, only ruins of the castle remain. The baroque pilgrimage church Romedikirchl and the remnants of the once-impressive castle shape the local landscape. Despite the pressure of settlement due to proximity to Innsbruck, Thaur has preserved its rural character. The municipality is known as a popular residential area and offers a pleasant quality of life in a picturesque setting at the eastern foot of the Nordkette.
