History & character
From the Neolithic to the Present
The municipality of Mutters in the Innsbruck-Land district has a long history that dates back to the Neolithic period when the area was likely already settled. Early urn finds from the Bronze Age attest to the early use of the region. The name "Muttres" is first documented around the turn of 1115/16, likely deriving from the Romansh word for "hill." In 1727, part of the village was destroyed by fire. The population suffered greatly during the Napoleonic Wars in 1796/1797 and 1809. During the battles at Bergisel, the "Schupfenwirt" on the Brennerstraße served as headquarters for Andreas Hofer. Today, Mutters is a tranquil community with 2,322 residents, located on a mid-mountain terrace at the entrance to the Stubai Valley. Its proximity to Innsbruck and picturesque surroundings define the character of Mutters, offering both tranquility and the amenities of urban life.
