History & character
From Early Settlement to Natters Municipality
Natters is first documented in 1138 and has a long history that dates back to the Bronze and Iron Ages. The name derives from the pre-Roman term *natra-, indicating the moist surroundings that stretched from Natterer Lake to the village. In the 6th century, the Bavarians migrated to the area, and in the 16th century, Emperor Maximilian I established a summer residence in Natters. In the 19th century, the village developed into a popular summer retreat. The opening of the Stubaitalbahn in 1904 and the Olympic Games in the 1960s contributed to the further development of the municipality. Today, Natters is known as a rural village with newer residential areas, appreciated for its proximity to Innsbruck and the picturesque Natterer Lake as a recreational area.
