Schönberg im Stubaital

History & character

Historic Schönberg in the Stubai Valley

Schönberg im Stubaital is a municipality with a long history dating back to Roman times. Finds of Roman roads indicate that the area was a significant transit point for trade over the Brenner Pass. The name Schönberg is first mentioned in a document from 1180. During the Battle of Bergisel, the former Gasthof Domanig served as headquarters for Andreas Hofer. The area further developed with the construction of the Brenner road and the Stephansbrücke between 1836 and 1845.

Today, Schönberg is a clustered village located about eleven kilometers south of Innsbruck. Surrounded by the impressive Stubai Alps and the plateau between the Ruetz and Sill rivers, it offers a quiet and nature-oriented quality of life. The municipality is also the seat of the Tyrolean Planning Association Stubaital and is part of the Stubai Tirol tourism region, giving it a certain significance in the regional context.

Climate & environment

On hot summer days, local cooling matters. Water close by cools the surroundings noticeably.

Real building heights (OpenStreetMap footprints with heights from the BEV laser scan), sun hours and shadows from sun position and geometry. How much of it reaches you also depends on orientation and windows. Terrain is included, from the official elevation model out to 12 km: a mountain to the south takes the winter sun just as the house opposite does. Where the sun only grazes a ridge, the figure remains an approximation. In the Inn valley the winter sun reaches only 19 degrees at midday, while the mountain ridges to the south rise 10 to 19 degrees above the city. Measured for 21 December, the terrain costs just under two hours in Hötting, a good two in the city centre, close to three at Sieglanger and six and a half in Amras below the Patscherkofel.
