Student housing in Klagenfurt
Around 13,000 people study at the University of Klagenfurt, in a city of 105,734. That is roughly one in eight residents, less than half the share in Innsbruck. Klagenfurt is a university city, but not a student city in that sense, and the housing market reflects it: there are fewer halls, and only one provider publishes what a place costs.
What a hall place costs, where anyone says so
We checked this at the providers themselves on 7 September 2026, not taken from a listings portal. And that check was worth it: the aggregator sites quote 325 to 354 euros for the same house, which is an out-of-date figure. The provider itself states these prices:
| Hall | Per month | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Akademikerhilfe, Studentendorf | 413 € | single studio of about 13 m² with kitchenette and shower/WC |
| Akademikerhilfe, Studentendorf | 436 € | the same, about 15 m² |
| home4students, Nautilusweg A and B | not stated | two houses; the provider publishes no price on its Klagenfurt pages |
| KHG hall of residence | not stated | run by the Catholic university chaplaincy, close to the campus |
Two published prices are not a market overview, and we will not pretend otherwise. What this table does show is the one thing worth knowing before you compare: a figure from an aggregator can be a year or more out of date, and here it was about 20 per cent too low. Ask the provider.
Where the halls are, and why that is unusual here
The University of Klagenfurt does not sit in the old town. Its campus is in Waidmannsdorf, in the west of the city, right by the Europapark and within walking distance of the lido on Lake Wörthersee. Among the seven cities we cover, no other campus sits like this, and it changes the housing question:
- Studentendorf, near the campus
- the largest provider presence in the city, single studios with their own kitchenette and bathroom.
- Nautilusweg A and B
- two houses from home4students, also on the western side towards the campus.
- KHG hall of residence
- run by the Catholic university chaplaincy, close to the campus and the lake.
- The Innere Stadt
- is a bus ride away, not a walk. If you want the old town on your doorstep you are choosing against the short way to lectures.
The trade here is unusually clear: the campus side gives you the lake, the park and the lido within walking distance but almost no nightlife; the Innere Stadt gives you the opposite. In our footfall data the entire retail core of the city sits on 1.4 per cent of the area, and the campus is not in it.
Flatshares: we are honest about this one
A flatshare is a normal way to live as a student here, and we cannot serve it: across all of Austria we currently hold a single flatshare listing. Rather than show you an empty result list, here is where flatshares are actually found in Klagenfurt: the ÖH housing exchange, the notice boards at the university, WG-Gesucht and local Facebook groups. We would rather send you away than waste your time.
When to apply
The pattern is the same at every provider: halls fill from spring for the winter semester. Klagenfurt has fewer places than Innsbruck or Graz, so the window is if anything narrower, not wider. If you know in spring that you are coming, apply then, even if the admission is not final. A place can be declined; a missing place cannot be conjured up in September.
What the location decides here
Three things are worth checking before you sign, and all three we can measure for any address:
- Noise, and where the map is silent
- Klagenfurt is not a designated agglomeration, so only the main transport routes are mapped, and of 6,561 inhabited locations only about one in nine carries a zone at all. Near the southern ring road or the A2 the map is meaningful and loud, above 75 dB. Elsewhere green means "not surveyed", not "quiet".
- Sun in winter
- On 21 December the sun above Klagenfurt reaches only 19.9 degrees at midday, and seen from Viktring the Sattnitz ridge to the south rises to 23.3. A ground-floor room facing the ridge can go without direct sun for weeks.
- The way to the campus
- Waidmannsdorf is not the centre. Check the actual route from the address to the lecture hall, not the map distance.
Frequently asked questions
- What does a room in a hall of residence cost in Klagenfurt?
- Where a price is published at all: 413 euros a month for a single studio of about 13 m² at the Akademikerhilfe Studentendorf, and 436 euros for about 15 m², each with its own kitchenette and shower. home4students and the KHG hall do not publish prices on their Klagenfurt pages. Note that aggregator sites quote 325 to 354 euros for the same house, which is out of date.
- How many students does Klagenfurt have?
- Around 13,000 at the University of Klagenfurt, which reported 12,826 in the winter semester of 2025. The Carinthian University of Applied Sciences has about 2,900, but spread across four locations (Feldkirchen, Klagenfurt, Spittal and Villach), so only part of that is here. The University College of Teacher Education publishes no total. At 105,734 inhabitants that is roughly one in eight people.
- Where is the University of Klagenfurt campus?
- In Waidmannsdorf, in the west of the city, right by the Europapark and within walking distance of the lido on Lake Wörthersee. It is not in the old town, which is a bus ride away.
- When should I apply for a hall place?
- In spring for the following winter semester. Klagenfurt has fewer places than the larger university cities, so applying late costs you more here, not less.
- Do you have flatshare rooms?
- No. Across all of Austria we currently hold a single flatshare listing, so we do not pretend to be a flatshare search. Try the ÖH housing exchange, the university notice boards, WG-Gesucht and local groups.
And what does wohnwahn do here?
We do not run a hall. What we do is the part no listing tells you: what an address is actually like. Official noise where it was surveyed and an honest gap where it was not, sun against the Karawanken horizon, warmth in the basin and the real travel time to the campus.
