History & character
From Greifenfels Castle to Modern Ebenthal
Ebenthal, first documented as Schrelz in 984, has a long history that dates back to the 9th century when King Louis the German granted possessions in Carinthia to the Archbishop of Salzburg. In the 12th century, Greifenfels Castle was built to secure the archbishop's holdings. Christoph von Neuhaus constructed a noble residence at the foot of the castle in 1566, which was documented as Ebenthal in 1567. In 1973, the municipality underwent significant expansion through incorporations and was renamed "Ebenthal in Carinthia" in 1998. The community has traditionally been home to many Carinthian Slovenes, whose coexistence with the German-speaking population was mostly harmonious but also marked by conflicts. A memorial stone commemorates the dark period of the Nazi regime when a transit camp for deported Slovenes was established in 1942. Today, Ebenthal is a quiet market town with 8163 residents, characterized by its diverse landscape between the Sattnitz mountain range and fertile plains.
