History & character
From Pilgrimage Site to Vibrant Community
Maria Rain, located in the Rosental, has a long history dating back to 927, when a church named 'Maria ad Dravum' was mentioned. The current name first appeared in official records in 1313. Until 1848, the area belonged to the Hollenburg district, with the Cistercian monastery Viktring playing a significant role as a landowner. The pilgrimage church, originally built in late Gothic style, was remodeled in Baroque style by the abbots of Viktring and remains a landmark of the community. In 1850, the local community was formed from the cadastral municipalities of Toppelsdorf, Tschedram, and Göltschach, which was renamed Maria Rain in 1895 to reflect the growing recognition of the village. A notable historical site is the Kaiserhütte, built in 1907 to give Emperor Franz Joseph I. a view of his army maneuvers. Today, Maria Rain's character is shaped by a harmonious blend of tradition and modern living, surrounded by the natural beauty of the Rosental and the Drau.

Real building heights (OpenStreetMap footprints with heights from the BEV laser scan), sun hours and shadows from sun position and geometry. How much of it reaches you also depends on orientation and windows. Terrain is included, from the official elevation model out to 12 km: a mountain to the south takes the winter sun just as the house opposite does. Where the sun only grazes a ridge, the figure remains an approximation. Along the southern edge of the city the Sattnitz ridge rises: the southern horizon measures 11 to 13 degrees there and over 20 on the slope itself, while the winter sun reaches only 19.9 degrees at midday. In Viktring, Stein and southern St. Ruprecht this costs winter sun; on the valley floor (4 to 6 degrees) the terrain does not matter.
