History & character
From the Carantanians to a Market Town
Köttmannsdorf, Slovenian Kotmara vas, is located southwest of Klagenfurt and is a bilingual market town in the Klagenfurt-Land district. The history of the area dates back to the settlement by the Carantanian Slavs in the 6th century. Köttmannsdorf was first documented in 1142, indicating a long tradition. In the 13th century, the area belonged to the property of the Viktring Abbey or the Keutschach lordship. The Hollenburg, also first mentioned in 1142, was for centuries the power center of the Rosental. The municipality of Köttmannsdorf was formed in 1850 from several cadastral municipalities, and in 1920 the population voted in the Carinthian plebiscite to remain with Austria. In 2023, Köttmannsdorf was elevated to a market town. Today, Köttmannsdorf is characterized by a rural atmosphere, surrounded by natural landscapes, and offers a quiet residential area with a strong connection to Slovenian culture.
