History & character
From Celtic Settlement to Residential Area
Viktring, first mentioned in 982 as Vitrino, has a long and eventful history. The origins of the place date back to Celtic times when Vitrino referred to a region extending up to the former St. Donat Church. The establishment of the Cistercian monastery in 1142 by Count Bernhard of Marburg made Viktring an important religious and cultural center in Carinthia. With the dissolution of the monastery in 1786 and its later incorporation into Klagenfurt in 1973, the significance of the place transformed. Today, Viktring is a popular residential area, renowned for its proximity to Lake Wörthersee. The former monastery has evolved into a secondary school and serves as a venue for artistic education and cultural events.

Real building heights (OpenStreetMap footprints with heights from the BEV laser scan), sun hours and shadows from sun position and geometry. How much of it reaches you also depends on orientation and windows. Terrain is included, from the official elevation model out to 12 km: a mountain to the south takes the winter sun just as the house opposite does. Where the sun only grazes a ridge, the figure remains an approximation. Along the southern edge of the city the Sattnitz ridge rises: the southern horizon measures 11 to 13 degrees there and over 20 on the slope itself, while the winter sun reaches only 19.9 degrees at midday. In Viktring, Stein and southern St. Ruprecht this costs winter sun; on the valley floor (4 to 6 degrees) the terrain does not matter.
