History & character
From Independent Municipality to City Border
St. Martin was an independent municipality until 1938, consisting of several localities such as Waidmannsdorf, Jesuitenmühle, and Kalvarienberg. The name Waidmannsdorf indicates a connection to an old village of Witman. As part of Klagenfurt's urban expansion, St. Martin was incorporated along with several neighboring areas, leading to the new city border at Lake Wörthersee. This incorporation was part of a larger plan that was interrupted by World War II. Since the founding of the University of Klagenfurt in 1970, St. Martin has developed into a student center. Today, the district is characterized by a quiet residential atmosphere near Lake Wörthersee and good access to Klagenfurt's city center.
