Moosburg

History & character

From Roman Road to Market Town Moosburg

Moosburg, known as Možberk in Slovenian, has a long history that dates back to Roman times. Important Roman roads passed through the area from around 15 BC, with remnants of these roads and Roman tombstones found in the parish church of St. Michael and St. George. In the Middle Ages, Moosburg was part of the Arnulf Castle, where the future Emperor Arnulf of Carinthia spent many years. Over the centuries, the rule over Moosburg changed hands among various noble families, including the Counts of Görz and the Habsburgs. In the 16th century, the area came into the possession of the Ernauer family, who built Moosburg Castle. In 1850, Moosburg became an independent local community and was granted the status of a market town in 1997. Today, Moosburg is idyllically situated in the Moosburger Basin, surrounded by a landscape of ponds and gently rolling hills, predominantly characterized by forests. The Moosburger Ponds are a distinctive feature of the area and offer a rich flora and fauna.

Real building heights (OpenStreetMap footprints with heights from the BEV laser scan), sun hours and shadows from sun position and geometry. How much of it reaches you also depends on orientation and windows. Terrain is included, from the official elevation model out to 12 km: a mountain to the south takes the winter sun just as the house opposite does. Where the sun only grazes a ridge, the figure remains an approximation. Along the southern edge of the city the Sattnitz ridge rises: the southern horizon measures 11 to 13 degrees there and over 20 on the slope itself, while the winter sun reaches only 19.9 degrees at midday. In Viktring, Stein and southern St. Ruprecht this costs winter sun; on the valley floor (4 to 6 degrees) the terrain does not matter.
