History & character
From the Neolithic to Market Town
Liebenfels is a market town in the district of St. Veit an der Glan, with its earliest traces dating back to the Neolithic period. The Hohenstein castle hill was an important sanctuary of Noreia in ancient times. Historically, the area was characterized by scythe and hammer works, while the first documented mention of the church in Glantschach dates back to 958/991. The municipality was established in 1958 through the merger of several predecessor communities and restructured in 1973 with the incorporation of Sörg. Today, Liebenfels is a quiet municipality nestled in a hilly and mountainous landscape. With 3401 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2026), the town offers a peaceful living environment distinguished by its proximity to the district capital St. Veit an der Glan and the provincial capital Klagenfurt.

Real building heights (OpenStreetMap footprints with heights from the BEV laser scan), sun hours and shadows from sun position and geometry. How much of it reaches you also depends on orientation and windows. Terrain is included, from the official elevation model out to 12 km: a mountain to the south takes the winter sun just as the house opposite does. Where the sun only grazes a ridge, the figure remains an approximation. Along the southern edge of the city the Sattnitz ridge rises: the southern horizon measures 11 to 13 degrees there and over 20 on the slope itself, while the winter sun reaches only 19.9 degrees at midday. In Viktring, Stein and southern St. Ruprecht this costs winter sun; on the valley floor (4 to 6 degrees) the terrain does not matter.
