St. Veit an der Glan

History & character

From Provincial Capital to Modern City

St. Veit an der Glan has a long history that dates back to antiquity. A Roman castle existed on the Gratzerkogel in the Zollfeld, which was replaced by a settlement in the 5th century. The founding of the town is linked to a legend about Saint Vitus and a Carantanian duke in 901. St. Veit quickly developed into an important center, especially under the Spanheims in the 12th century when the town was first mentioned as a 'forum'. The ducal residence was moved to St. Veit in the late 12th century, and the town experienced economic growth, leading to the construction of city walls and a mint. Over the centuries, St. Veit lost significance when Klagenfurt was designated as the provincial capital in 1518. Nevertheless, the town remained an important location for provincial authorities and continued to develop.

Today, St. Veit an der Glan presents itself as a city with historical charm. The old town is characterized by medieval structures, and numerous monuments testify to its rich history. The city is not only an administrative center today but also a place that combines tradition and modernity. The surrounding area offers an attractive landscape and many recreational opportunities.

Real building heights (OpenStreetMap footprints with heights from the BEV laser scan), sun hours and shadows from sun position and geometry. How much of it reaches you also depends on orientation and windows. Terrain is included, from the official elevation model out to 12 km: a mountain to the south takes the winter sun just as the house opposite does. Where the sun only grazes a ridge, the figure remains an approximation. Along the southern edge of the city the Sattnitz ridge rises: the southern horizon measures 11 to 13 degrees there and over 20 on the slope itself, while the winter sun reaches only 19.9 degrees at midday. In Viktring, Stein and southern St. Ruprecht this costs winter sun; on the valley floor (4 to 6 degrees) the terrain does not matter.
