Ferlach

History & character

From Gunmaker Town to Modern Community

Ferlach, established in the 12th century and first mentioned in 1246, is located in the Rosental region of Carinthia, south of Klagenfurt. The name refers to the surrounding pine forests. Since the 14th century, an ironworking industry has developed here, favored by the ore deposits in the Karawanken mountains and the water power of the nearby streams. With Klagenfurt's elevation to the provincial capital around 1529, the gunmaking trade in Ferlach gained importance. During Empress Maria Theresa's reign, it achieved worldwide fame, and Ferlach hunting rifles are still valued for their quality today.

The community was established in 1850 as Oberferlach and renamed Ferlach in 1910, before gaining city rights in 1930. Today, Ferlach is the southernmost town in Austria, known for its natural setting between the Karawanken and Sattnitz mountains and its tradition in gunmaking.

Real building heights (OpenStreetMap footprints with heights from the BEV laser scan), sun hours and shadows from sun position and geometry. How much of it reaches you also depends on orientation and windows. Terrain is included, from the official elevation model out to 12 km: a mountain to the south takes the winter sun just as the house opposite does. Where the sun only grazes a ridge, the figure remains an approximation. Along the southern edge of the city the Sattnitz ridge rises: the southern horizon measures 11 to 13 degrees there and over 20 on the slope itself, while the winter sun reaches only 19.9 degrees at midday. In Viktring, Stein and southern St. Ruprecht this costs winter sun; on the valley floor (4 to 6 degrees) the terrain does not matter.
