History & character
From Roman Provincial Capital to Pilgrimage Community
Maria Saal, known in Slovenian as Gospa Sveta, has a long history dating back to the 1st century AD when the Roman provincial capital Virunum was founded on Magdalensberg. This settlement succeeded the Celtic capital Noreia. In 590, the area was settled by Slavs, with Virunum mentioned as a bishopric. The Christianization of the area began around 300 and was furthered from Maria Saal in a second wave in the 8th century under Bishop Virgil. The Marian church, built in the 8th century, played a central role in the region's history, as the Dukes of Carinthia were appointed and blessed here. Over the centuries, the church underwent various renovations, including being fortified in the 15th century and restored after a fire. Today, Maria Saal is a market community with around 4040 inhabitants, known for its Marian church. The municipality extends across the picturesque Zollfeld, offering a tranquil rural setting that is appealing to both locals and visitors.
