History & character
From Carinthian-Slovenian History to Modern Settlement
Hörtendorf, Slovenian Trdnja vas, is a district in the east of Klagenfurt am Wörthersee. Geographically, it lies in the central area of the Klagenfurt field and is traversed by the Raba river. The district was incorporated into the city of Klagenfurt in 1973, which also affected parts of the municipalities of Ebenthal and Poggersdorf. Historically, Hörtendorf is strongly influenced by Carinthian-Slovenian culture, as reflected in the Slovenian place names and the bilingual church history. The region has a long tradition, dating back to the Carantanian princes and Carinthian dukes, who once celebrated their enthronement rites here.
Today, Hörtendorf is characterized by a quiet residential atmosphere, benefiting from its rural surroundings and proximity to Klagenfurt. The transport links via the Völkermarkter Straße and the bus lines of Klagenfurt's municipal services make the district easily accessible. Hörtendorf offers a blend of rural charm and urban connectivity, making it an attractive place to live for those who appreciate the advantages of both lifestyles.

Real building heights (OpenStreetMap footprints with heights from the BEV laser scan), sun hours and shadows from sun position and geometry. How much of it reaches you also depends on orientation and windows. Terrain is included, from the official elevation model out to 12 km: a mountain to the south takes the winter sun just as the house opposite does. Where the sun only grazes a ridge, the figure remains an approximation. Along the southern edge of the city the Sattnitz ridge rises: the southern horizon measures 11 to 13 degrees there and over 20 on the slope itself, while the winter sun reaches only 19.9 degrees at midday. In Viktring, Stein and southern St. Ruprecht this costs winter sun; on the valley floor (4 to 6 degrees) the terrain does not matter.
