History & character
From Independent Municipality to Urban Integration
St. Peter, also known as St. Peter-Welzenegg, was an independent municipality until 1938 when it was incorporated into the city of Klagenfurt. The district has a historical background shaped by industrial developments, such as the spirit and yeast factory in Limmersach, acquired in the late 19th century. This factory is now an industrial ruin, while the adjacent mansion has found a new purpose as a municipal kindergarten. St. Peter is also the birthplace of physicist Josef Stefan, known for his contributions to thermodynamics.
Today, St. Peter is a vibrant city district with a high population, featuring large residential areas and significant educational institutions. The district serves as a cultural center for the Carinthian Slovenes and offers numerous intercultural meeting places. Additionally, important infrastructures such as the State Fire Brigade Command and large shopping centers are located here. The Koralmbahn runs through the district, enhancing its connectivity with other towns.
