From Eastern Suburb to Bishop's Residence
The Völkermarkter Vorstadt is part of the historical urban area of Klagenfurt and encompasses the area east of the former city wall. The district was connected to the city center via the Völkermarkter or Black Gate, located on today's Salmstraße. In 1893, the district was slightly expanded. Today, Völkermarkter Vorstadt is a significant part of Klagenfurt, characterized by historical buildings and important institutions.
Today, Völkermarkter Vorstadt is defined by a mix of residential areas and public institutions. Notably, it houses the residence of the Bishop of Gurk, the Bishop's Palace, built in the 18th century.
