History & character
From City Wall to Tobacco Factory
The Viktringer Vorstadt is part of the historical city area of Klagenfurt, located south of the former city wall. This suburb was connected to the city center by a city gate and was slightly expanded in 1893. In the 19th century, significant industries emerged in the area, particularly the tobacco factory, which provided many women with jobs, albeit often under challenging conditions. This factory started production in 1864 and developed into an important employer in the region over the years. At its peak, the workforce comprised several hundred employees, including many young women who worked from a very young age. The social situation of the workers was often precarious, which was reflected in the working conditions. Today, Viktringer Vorstadt is a quiet district characterized by a mix of residential areas and historical elements.
