History & character
From Roman Legion City to Metropolis
The origins of the Inner City date back to a Celtic settlement and the later established Roman legion camp Vindobona. Until the incorporation of the suburbs in 1850, the history of the city of Vienna was also that of today's 1st district. With the Vienna City Hall, the Hofburg, and St. Stephen's Cathedral, the Inner City remains the political, economic, and spiritual center of Vienna. The late antique military city formed the core of the present district, which was resettled in the early Middle Ages by utilizing the Roman fortifications. In the 13th century, the city expanded to the area of the Canabae and was fortified with city walls. The incorporation in 1850 expanded the district and led to the demolition of the city walls and the creation of the Ringstraße with its grand buildings.
Today, the Inner City is one of Vienna's most significant districts. It combines historical architecture with vibrant urban culture and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Historic Center of Vienna. With around 110,000 employees, it offers a high density of jobs, attributed to its central location and the presence of numerous administrative authorities and companies.
