History & character
From Annabichl Castle to Modern Settlement
Annabichl, whose name derives from Annabichl Castle built in 1580, was known as the Klagenfurt place of execution from 1528, which was later relocated. Here, Hermann von Spanheim founded the first city of Klagenfurt, which was moved to its current location due to flooding by the Glan River. The formerly independent municipality of Annabichl was incorporated into the city of Klagenfurt in 1938. Around 1900, the Glan River was regulated to expand agricultural land and accommodate the growing population. Today, Annabichl is a district in the north of Klagenfurt, home to the Klagenfurt Central Cemetery and Klagenfurt Airport. The area is characterized by several elevations, including the Maria Saaler Berg, and offers numerous recreational opportunities, such as hiking trails and the Glanpark, which invites relaxation.
