History & character
From Island to Peninsula at Lake Wörthersee
Maria Wörth, first mentioned as 'Maria Werd' in the 9th century, has a long history closely linked to the development of the Kärnten region. The peninsula, where the Gothic pilgrimage church is located, was an island in Lake Wörthersee until 1770. The first Marian church was built around 875, and over the centuries, several churches were established in the surrounding area. The political municipality of Maria Wörth was formed in 1903, after the cadastral municipalities of Maria Wörth and Reifnitz belonged to different local communities. An artificial drainage of Lake Wörthersee in 1770 shaped the peninsula into its current form, characterized by a high forested area and hilly terrain.
Today, Maria Wörth is a quiet municipality with 1,636 residents, distinguished by its idyllic location on Lake Wörthersee and the surrounding nature. The community is divided into several localities, including the quaint Reifnitz. The character of the place is strongly influenced by its history and beautiful landscape, making it an attractive residential area in the Klagenfurt vicinity.

Climate & environment
On hot summer days, local cooling matters. Water close by cools the surroundings noticeably.

Real building heights (OpenStreetMap footprints with heights from the BEV laser scan), sun hours and shadows from sun position and geometry. How much of it reaches you also depends on orientation and windows. Terrain is included, from the official elevation model out to 12 km: a mountain to the south takes the winter sun just as the house opposite does. Where the sun only grazes a ridge, the figure remains an approximation. Along the southern edge of the city the Sattnitz ridge rises: the southern horizon measures 11 to 13 degrees there and over 20 on the slope itself, while the winter sun reaches only 19.9 degrees at midday. In Viktring, Stein and southern St. Ruprecht this costs winter sun; on the valley floor (4 to 6 degrees) the terrain does not matter.
