Student housing in St. Pölten
One thing first, because most sources still have it wrong: the Fachhochschule St. Pölten has been called USTP, University of Applied Sciences St. Pölten, since November 2025. Around 4,000 people study there, in a city of about 57,000. A hall place costs between 339 and 415 euros a month, all-inclusive, and the range is unusually narrow.
What a hall place costs
We checked this at the providers themselves on 7 September 2026, not taken from a listings portal. Both figures include all running costs, so they are comparable:

A range of 339 to 415 euros is narrow for a university city. In Innsbruck the same comparison runs from 344 to 789. But note what this range does not follow: St. Pölten is the cheapest flat market of the seven cities we cover, and its hall places still cost about the same as in Klagenfurt and more than the cheapest bed in Innsbruck. Hall prices are set by the provider, not by the local property market.
Where the campus is, and why commuting is a real option here
The USTP campus sits next to the main station. From there a train reaches Vienna in about half an hour, which makes commuting a genuine alternative to renting a room, and that is not true in any other market we cover. Three consequences worth weighing:
- Living in St. Pölten
- a hall place from 339 euros, everything on foot, and rents that are the lowest of our seven markets.
- Commuting from Vienna
- about half an hour by train from Vienna to the campus. If you already have a room in Vienna, the maths may work out.
- Living near the railway
- has a measured price. Right at the line the official noise map shows over 75 dB by day and over 70 at night, the top band of both scales. Convenient and loud are the same address here.
St. Pölten also has the New Design University and the Bertha von Suttner Private University besides the USTP. Neither publishes a comparable student total, so we do not add one up.
Flatshares: we are honest about this one
A flatshare is a normal way to live as a student here, and we cannot serve it: across all of Austria we currently hold a single flatshare listing. Rather than show you an empty result list, here is where flatshares are actually found: the ÖH housing exchange, the notice boards at the USTP, WG-Gesucht and local groups. We would rather send you away than waste your time.
When to apply
Halls fill from spring for the winter semester, and St. Pölten has fewer places than the big university cities. Apply in spring, even if the admission is not final. A place can be declined; a missing place cannot be conjured up in September.
What the location decides here
Three things are worth checking before you sign, and all three we can measure for any address:
- Noise, and where the map is silent
- St. Pölten is not a designated agglomeration. Only the western railway, the A1, the S33 and the main roads are mapped, and of 5,118 inhabited locations only about one in six carries a zone. Near the railway the map is meaningful and loud; elsewhere green means "not surveyed", not "quiet".
- The walk to the campus
- The campus is at the station, which is the short way for most halls. Check the actual route, not the map distance.
- What the flat costs after your studies
- St. Pölten is the cheapest flat market of our seven, at 2,004 euros per square metre from real purchase contracts. If you are thinking beyond the degree, that is the number to know.

We do not run a hall. What we do is the part no listing tells you: what an address is actually like. Official noise where it was surveyed and an honest gap where it was not, sun, warmth and the real travel time, from the timetables rather than from a map distance.
