History & character
From Border Fortress to Town Municipality
Herzogenburg is a town municipality that is among the oldest inhabited areas in Austria. It has been settled since the Neolithic period and belonged to the Roman province of Noricum in antiquity. The place was first mentioned in a document in 1014, with its name deriving from a duke's castle established in the 9th century by border counts. The settlement quickly developed under the protection of this fortress. Over the centuries, two markets emerged, the Lower Market and the Upper Market, with the latter being shaped in the 13th century by the Augustinian canonry of St. Georgen. Herzogenburg was a war zone in the Middle Ages but withstood several sieges, thanks largely to the abbey's efforts. Today, Herzogenburg presents itself as a town municipality with 7961 inhabitants, offering a quiet living environment in the lower Traisental. The historical significance is still palpable while the town has simultaneously modernized.

How much of it reaches you also depends on orientation and windows. Terrain is included, from the official elevation model out to 12 km: a mountain to the south takes the winter sun just as the house opposite does. Where the sun only grazes a ridge, the figure remains an approximation.
