History & character
From Salt Road to Market Town
Ober-Grafendorf is located in the Mostviertel region of Lower Austria and has a long history dating back to ancient times. The area was part of the province of Noricum and served as an important junction for trade routes, including an old salt road. The first written mention of Grafendorf dates back to the 12th century. The parish was established in the late 12th century, and the Gothic church was built in 1365. The nearby Schloss Fridau, first documented in 1299, is historically significant. Over the centuries, the town experienced several raids and destructions, including during the Turkish wars and the Napoleonic wars. In 1898, Ober-Grafendorf became a small transport hub with the opening of the Pielachtalbahn. In 1972, the community was renamed Ober-Grafendorf. Today, Ober-Grafendorf is a market town with 4972 inhabitants and comprises 17 localities. The community offers a quiet, rural atmosphere and is surrounded by forests and agricultural land, making it an attractive place for nature lovers to reside.

Real building heights (OpenStreetMap footprints with heights from the BEV laser scan), sun hours and shadows from sun position and geometry. How much of it reaches you also depends on orientation and windows. Terrain is included, from the official elevation model out to 12 km: a mountain to the south takes the winter sun just as the house opposite does. Where the sun only grazes a ridge, the figure remains an approximation.
