History & character

From Market Town to Linz's Periphery

Ebelsberg, located south of the Traun, was an independent market town until its incorporation into Linz in 1938. The geographical location of the district favored a fortification and bridge function, dating back to the Neolithic period. Archaeological finds and its significance as a Traun crossing during Roman times attest to its long history of settlement. The first documented mention of a closed settlement dates back to 1071. By the 13th century, Ebelsberg may have already been a market, confirmed by market rights in 1439. The history of the market is closely tied to Schloss Ebelsberg, which changed owners frequently and played a central role in various historical events, including the Battle of Ebelsberg in 1809 during the Napoleonic Wars. Today, Ebelsberg is a district of Linz characterized by a mix of residential areas and historical substance. The tram connection, restored in 2002, improves access to the city center of Linz and supports the growing construction activity in the surrounding area.

How much of it reaches you also depends on orientation and windows. Terrain is included, from the official elevation model out to 12 km: a mountain to the south takes the winter sun just as the house opposite does. Where the sun only grazes a ridge, the figure remains an approximation.
