History & character
From Roman Roads to Wienerwald Idyl
Hadersdorf-Weidlingau is part of the 14th Viennese district Penzing and was an independent municipality before 1938. Archaeological findings indicate settlement during Roman times, while a small Avar settlement existed on Buchberg during the Migration Period. The first documentary mention of Hadersdorf dates back to the 12th century when a fortification was built on the site of today's Schloss Laudon. This was destroyed during the First Turkish Siege of Vienna in 1529. In the 18th century, Schloss Laudon underwent its present reconstruction and is now the only water castle in the Viennese city area.
In the 19th century, Hadersdorf-Weidlingau developed into a popular second residence, facilitated by the construction of the West Railway. Wealthy city dwellers built villas in the typical Wienerwald style, some of which still exist today. Despite the incorporation into Greater Vienna in 1938, the district has retained its rural character and offers a quiet, nature-oriented living atmosphere today.
