History & character
From Babenberger Town to Modern Community
Mödling is a municipality with a long history, whose name has evolved over the centuries from medilihha to Medelikch and Medling to Mödling. The roots of the place name trace back to the Slavic period, likely referring to a border creek or a slowly flowing water body. Mödling was once the seat of a branch of the Babenberg family and is today referred to as Babenbergerstadt. The earliest settlement finds in the area date back to the Neolithic, and the region was also inhabited during the Bronze Age and the Celtic Hallstatt period, indicating significant historical importance.
Today, Mödling is located 15 kilometers south of Vienna and has merged with neighboring municipalities to form part of the Vienna agglomeration. The town is characterized by its geographical location at the transition between the Wienerwald and the Wiener Becken, reflected in the landscape with hills and vineyards. Mödling combines urban life with nature-friendly recreational areas and offers a mix of historical old town and modern residential structures.
