History & character
From Roman Baths to Spa Town Baden
Baden, also known as Baden bei Wien, has a long and diverse history. Archaeological finds from the Königshöhle indicate settlement in the area nearly 3000 years ago. The Romans quickly recognized the advantages of the warm sulfur springs and referred to the settlement as Aquae, highlighting its role as a spa. From the 14th century onwards, the town developed further, receiving market rights in 1341 and city status in 1480. Over the centuries, Baden experienced numerous cultural and historical highlights, including visits from figures such as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Emperor Franz I, who made the city his summer residence.
Today, Baden is a significant spa town that belongs to the UNESCO World Heritage List. The city is known for its Biedermeier architecture, a rich culture of art and wine, as well as being the seat of the district administration. With around 26,000 residents, Baden harmoniously combines history and modernity, offering a pleasant living environment for its inhabitants.
