History & character
From Neolithic Times to a Modern Community
Brunn am Gebirge has a long history that dates back to the Neolithic period. The early Neolithic site in Wolfsholz is one of the oldest known agricultural settlements in Austria. Around the year 1000, the town center emerged, known as Prun or Brun, which translates to "well". Over the centuries, the area has been shaped by various events, including the brick industry in the 18th and 19th centuries and the Brunn Brewery, which became one of the largest in the monarchy in the 19th century. The community suffered significant destruction during the two Turkish sieges and the Thirty Years' War. After World War II, Brunn am Gebirge returned to Lower Austria in 1954. Today, it is an important economic hub in southern Vienna, known for its commercial and industrial areas as well as the Campus 21 business park, which characterizes the municipality.
