History & character
From Marsh Water to Modern Market Town
Vösendorf, a market town in Lower Austria, has a long history that dates back to the Neolithic period. The name 'Vösendorf' may derive from the Indo-Germanic Slavic root for 'marsh water.' The first written mention can be found in a document from 1175. Over the centuries, Vösendorf has been the site of numerous historical events, including destruction during the Turkish invasions and subsequent rebuilding by various noble families. In the 19th century, Vösendorf became a center for brick production, which brought economic prosperity to the community. The opening of a railway line facilitated the transport of bricks to Vienna and contributed to further development.
Today, Vösendorf is a vibrant market town with 7,663 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2026), located directly adjacent to the capital city of Vienna. Its proximity to the city combined with a peaceful, rural atmosphere makes Vösendorf an attractive place to live for many people.
