History & character

From Political Unity to Residential Area

Liesing is the 23rd district of Vienna and was established in 1938 through the merger of several independent municipalities. Already in the Middle Ages, there were political connections between the towns in the region, reflected in the ownership structures of the feudal estates. The parish of Atzgersdorf served as a religious center for the surrounding areas until the Josephinian reforms. Throughout the 19th century, the present-day districts of Liesing were incorporated into the political administration of the Hietzing district. Following the annexation of Austria to the German Reich, Liesing became part of Greater Vienna in 1938 as the 25th district. The Second World War and the subsequent Soviet occupation left their mark, and after 1945, memorials for the victims of National Socialism were established.

Today, Liesing is characterized by a blend of urban life and quiet residential areas. The district's development is reflected in the variety of architecture, ranging from historical buildings to modern residential complexes. Liesing is a popular residential area for families and offers good connections to the city center of Vienna.
