Alterlaa

History & character

From Agriculture to Urban Development

Alterlaa, originally known as Erlaa, was first mentioned in documents in 1114 and was an independent municipality until 1938. The area was heavily influenced by agriculture and grew slowly, with only 465 inhabitants in 1831. Following the incorporation into Vienna in 1938 and subsequent urbanization, Alterlaa lost its rural character. After World War II, it was decided that Alterlaa would remain part of the 23rd district. Today, around 15,000 people live in Alterlaa, which is increasingly urbanized. A notable event in recent history was the explosion of an unexploded bomb in 2008, which dates back to the war and raised awareness of the area's history.
