History & character
From Independent Community to Urban Oasis
Rodaun was first mentioned in documents around 1170 as Radune and has a Slavic origin. In the 15th century, lime was quarried in the area for the Vienna city fortifications. During the first and second Turkish sieges of Vienna, Rodaun experienced devastation. In the 18th century, the area was known for its thermal spring used for cures and became a summer residence for several noble families. Rodaun was established as an independent parish in 1783 and developed into an independent local community in Lower Austria in the 19th century. In 1938, Rodaun became part of Vienna due to the incorporation of 96 Lower Austrian municipalities and is now part of the 23rd district Liesing. In 2020, around 8414 people lived here. Rodaun's character is marked by a quiet, almost village-like atmosphere that offers residents a high quality of life while ensuring proximity to the city.
