History & character
From the Neolithic to a Modern Residential Area
Mauer, originally an independent settlement, was first mentioned in writing in 1210. In the Neolithic period, the area around Antonshöhe was characterized by a flint quarry. During the Middle Ages, viticulture began, which remains a tradition in Mauer to this day. After several changes of ownership, including by the Jesuits, Mauer became an autonomous local community in 1850 and experienced a flourishing period in the Biedermeier era as a summer retreat for wealthy Viennese. In 1938, Mauer was incorporated into Greater Vienna and has since belonged to the 23rd district of Liesing. Today, Mauer is a vibrant district with a population of around 17,000, combining rural and urban elements and offering a high quality of living.
