History & character
From Trading Place to Korneuburg Municipality
The origins of Korneuburg trace back to a small trading place on the Danube, first mentioned around 1114. By the 13th century, the settlement developed into an important market and seat of a district court, solidifying its central role for the surrounding area. By 1300, Korneuburg received city rights and became a significant Danube trading city, benefiting from trade in salt, wine, and grain. The city walls and the tower built in the 15th century bear witness to its historical significance. The religious center is the parish church of St. Ägyd, whose origins date back to the 13th century. Over the centuries, Korneuburg experienced various religious movements, including a period of Protestantism in the 16th century and subsequent recatholicization.
Today, Korneuburg is a municipality in the Weinviertel with approximately 13,790 inhabitants. Its geographical location on the Danube, 12 km northwest of Vienna, shapes the character of the city, which, due to its historical roots and proximity to the metropolis, continues to play a central role in the region.
