History & character
From Neolithic Village to Market Town
Langenzersdorf is a market town in the Korneuburg district of Lower Austria, first documented in 1108. The area has a long history of settlement, dating back to the Neolithic Lengyel culture. In the 12th century, the Klosterneuburg Monastery took over control of the area. By the 17th century, Langenzersdorf developed into a post station and experienced economic growth in the 19th century with the construction of a shipping station and a railway station. This period also saw the emergence of many villas and garden houses. The district of Seeschlacht is a reminder of the historical fortifications of the Danube bank, which were created during the Danube regulation in the 19th century. After World War II, Langenzersdorf became an independent municipality again in 1954 and was granted market town status in 1960. Today, Langenzersdorf is a quiet, green community with 8197 inhabitants, situated between the Danube and Bisamberg, and characterized by its proximity to the Vienna Danube Island.
