History & character

From Prehistory to Industrial City

Floridsdorf, the 21st district of Vienna, has a long history that dates back to the Younger Stone Age. Early settlements indicate hunters living in this area. With the arrival of the Celts around 500 BC, a tumultuous history began, marked by struggles between Romans and Germans. In the year 1000, the area was settled by the Babenberg family, with the first documented mention of Jedlesee dating back to 1014. From the 19th century onwards, Floridsdorf underwent rapid development as industrialization transformed the region from an agricultural area into an industrial city, facilitated by the Danube regulation in the 1870s. In 1904, Floridsdorf was finally incorporated into Vienna.

Today, Floridsdorf is the second largest and third most populous district of Vienna. The infrastructure is well-developed, and its location by the Danube offers both recreational opportunities and access to the city. The character of the district is shaped by a mix of urban life and green spaces, making it an attractive place to live.

Real building heights (official Vienna building model, computed from the BEV laser scan in the surroundings), sun hours and shadows from sun position and geometry. How much of it reaches you also depends on orientation and windows. Terrain is included, from the official elevation model out to 12 km: a mountain to the south takes the winter sun just as the house opposite does. Where the sun only grazes a ridge, the figure remains an approximation. In Vienna the terrain rarely matters: ten minutes in the Innere Stadt, and just as little at the Döbling vineyards, where the slope lies to the north-west and never touches the southern sun. It only tells in the Wienerwald valleys, at Kalksburg a good two hours on 21 December.
